Acetazolamide is a sulphonamide drug which acts by inhibiting the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. This enzyme is of great importance in the production of acide and alkaline secretions in the body. Acetazolamide sometimes used as a second-line drug for partial seizures in epilepsy.It also has diuretic action and is used to treat glaucoma. A topical derivatecalled dorzolamide is used as a eye drops, as is the recently introduced brinzolamide.
